Fall With Fido

Autumn can be breathtakingly beautiful here in Wisconsin. Many of our canine patients love this time of year. Those crisp autumn days are great dog-walking weather! However, there are a few things you’ll want to keep in mind as the weather cools. A local Eau Claire, WI vet offers some advice on spending autumn with your furry best friend in this article.

Keep The Pup Comfy

Fido’s fur coat may not completely protect him from the cold. Make sure he has a comfy doggy bed to snuggle up in. If your four-legged friend has thin fur, he’ll need some jackets or sweaters.

Night Walks

It’s getting dark early now. Fido will need a reflective leash, harness, and/or jacket. You should also wear light or reflective jackets, so drivers can spot you. You may find it a good idea to get a leash with a flashlight attached.

Beware Seasonal Toxins

Many seasonal plants are toxic to Fido. That includes chrysanthemums, autumn crocuses, and many mushrooms. There’s also the fact that many people treat their lawns and gardens with chemicals at this time of year. It’s very easy for pets to ingest these toxins, simply by walking through them and licking themselves.

Halloween

Halloween is particularly dangerous for our furry friends. Most of those sweet treats and candies are unsafe for pets. Decorations can also pose a risk. Keep anything that could be dangerous out of paws’ reach. Plus, your canine buddy may get worked up by a stream of costumed visitors. Keep Fido safe and sound inside that night.

Diet

You may need to make a few changes to Fido’s nutritional regimen. Some dogs need to eat larger portions as the weather drops. If your pooch is thin, a puppy, a nursing mama, a working dog, or spends a lot of time outdoors, he’ll burn extra calories in winter just staying warm. Some dogs may benefit from supplements. For instance, pups with arthritis or other bone/joint issues may do well with glucosamine or fish oil. Ask your vet for specific advice on this.

Enjoy The Weather

It won’t be long now before temperatures really plummet. Take advantage of the good weather while you can! On nice days, take Fido outside for some fun walks and play sessions.
