September is Responsible Dog Ownership Month! Dogs are more than furry, four-legged roommates; they’re friends and family members, too. Of course, taking good care of your canine buddy entails a lot more than just giving him treats and belly rubs. Responsible dog ownership entails many different things … some of which Fido would probably rather do without. A local Eau Claire, WI vet lists a few of these below.

Leashes

Walks aren’t just important for sanitary reasons: they also give your pup a chance to enjoy some fresh air and sunshine. That said, it’s probably safe to assume that, given the chance, Fido would ditch the leash entirely.

Baths

Most of our canine friends would definitely scratch this one off the list if they could. However, even if Fido hates getting sudsed up, he’ll feel much better with clean, soft fur that is free of mats and tangles.

Spay/Neuter Surgery

Getting your furry friend fixed is crucial to helping curb pet overpopulation. It also helps with many behavioral issues. Fido, of course, would probably opt out of this one.

Nail Clipping

Overgrown nails may sound like a minor issue, but they actually can be quite problematic. These are just as uncomfortable for dogs as long nails are for us. Fido may actually shift his weight or adjust his stride to compensate. That’s bad for his bones and joints, and is particularly problematic for senior dogs.

Proper Nutrition

Fido is of course very enthusiastic about food, but it’s probably safe to say that, given the choice, he’d have you fill his bowl with bacon or steak every day. Sorry, buddy!

Fences

Do you have a yard for Fido to play in? That’s great! Your furry buddy will enjoy and benefit from the exercise and fresh air. Of course, given the option, your pooch would probably rather be able to roam around freely.

Window

We know, it’s always cute seeing dogs riding around with their heads out the window. Unfortunately, this can be quite dangerous. Your four-legged friend could get dust, pebbles, or insects in his face or eyes. He could also get seriously hurt in an accident, or even if you have to stop or start quickly. Keep Fido crated for travel!
