National Kids And Pets Day is April 26th. Pets can be very important and beneficial to children. Our furry pals teach little ones about friendship, kindness, and empathy; provide unconditional love; and make great playmates and napping buddies. This is definitely an occasion worth celebrating! A Eau Claire, WI vet suggests a few ways to honor this special day below.
Crafts
There’s almost no end to the things that your little ones can make for pets. If you have a pocket pet, have them make chew toys out of cardboard or plain paper. Fluffy may enjoy a box castle or a new bed, or perhaps a hand-sewn catnip mouse. As for Fido, you can make him some fun rope toys, a comfy bed, or even a sweater. Look online for ideas and instructions.
Photo Sessions
We never get tired of seeing pictures of our furry patients with their tiny humans. Snap some cute photos of your children with the family pets!
Story Time
Stories really help children learn a lot about the world. When it’s time for bed, pick a cute pet-themed tale. If your kids are a bit older, get them a book about our animal friends. Or, better yet, have them write a little story or poem about the family pet.
Baking
If we could ask our furry friends what their very favorite things are, we suspect that treats would rank pretty high on their lists. You can find some great recipes for simple treats you can make Fluffy and Fido. If you have a smaller pet, such as a pocket pet, you’re best off sticking with whole foods. Make sure to only use safe ingredients. Ask your vet for specific advice.
Playtime!
One thing pets and kids have in common? They both love to play! Buy (or make) some new toys for your four-legged friend, and indulge them with a fun play session. Just be sure to stick with safe, suitable options. If your children are very young, you’ll need to supervise playtime.
Movies
Watching a good movie is a great way to relax and unwind after a long day. There’s no shortage of adorable animal movies to watch! These are often just as fun for grown-ups as they are for kids!
