Canine Fitness

April is Canine Fitness Month! Proper activity is just as important for our furry companions as it is for us. Of course, doggy workouts are not one-size-fits-all. Read on as a local Eau Claire, WI vet offers some tips on keeping Fido fit.

Choose Appropriate Activity

Not all activities are right for every dog. Jumping isn’t a good option for many large breeds, as it’s quite hard on their hips. Other pooches, such as brachycephalic dogs, shouldn’t be encouraged to run or swim, because they get winded very quickly. You’ll also need to consider your pet’s age, size, and breed. A pudgy pup isn’t going to have the endurance that a fit one will. Of course, your dog’s personal preferences will also come into play here. If Fido hates the water, then swimming won’t be a good option for him! Ask your vet for specific advice.

Watch For Overexertion

Man’s Best Friend often pushes himself to please his humans. This is cute, but it can also be dangerous. Keep an eye out for signs of overexertion. If your furry best friend starts panting heavily, slowing down, or lagging behind, then immediately stop and let him have some water and catch his breath. Then, head for home.

Endurance

Dogs can be quite rugged and strong, but they need to build up their endurance over time. If you want to do something vigorous with Fido, such as hiking or running, start by alternating walking and jogging. Over time, you can increase the amount of time that you and your canine pal are running.

Don’t Stop Walking

It doesn’t matter whether you have a furry, four-legged bundle of energy, or a fuzzy couch potato. Fido will still need daily walks! Those strolls are not only important for sanitary reasons, they also provide your pooch with beneficial mental stimulation. Even if you have a yard, make time to walk your canine companion at least once a day.

Have Fun With It

Don’t think of Fido’s workout as a chore. It’s a fun way to spend time with your pet. Time spent with our furry friends really is never wasted. There are few things more fun to watch than a pooch joyfully bounding around, just enjoying being a dog.
