Things to Know Before Adopting a Hamster

Are you looking for a small pet, perhaps for your child? A hamster may very well be at the top of your list. These guys are very popular children’s pets, and with good reason. They’re cute, gentle, and easy to care for. However, it’s important to do some research before choosing. Here, an Eau Claire, WI vet lists some things you should know before adopting Hammie.

Hammie’s Schedule

Hamsters tend to be nocturnal, so they are more active at night than during the day. This is something you’ll need to keep in mind if you plan to keep Hammie in a child’s room. Your tiny furball could possibly keep your youngster up at night, either by being a bit noisy or just by being so cute that your child keeps watching him.

Temperature Requirements

Hamsters are very sensitive to temperature extremes. If Hammie gets too cold, he may try to hibernate. This is very dangerous for pet hamsters. They don’t know how to hibernate properly, and often dehydrate as a result. You’ll need to keep Hammie in a room that always stays between .

No Roommates

Hamsters may be cute, but that doesn’t mean they will get along with potential roommates. In fact, most hamsters need to live alone. Some smaller hamsters can live with same-sex roommates, but only if they are raised together. If you have two children, and you want to get them both hamsters, they’ll need separate cages.

Hammie Begs

Many pets have pretty formidable acting skills. Hammie is very, very good at pretending he’s really hungry … while hoping you won’t notice that he already stashed away some goodies for later. Chubby hamsters may be cute, but, just like any other overweight pet, they will face some very serious health problems. Keep an eye on your furry friend’s waistline!

Hamsters Can Get Sick

Little pets can also develop a variety of illnesses and injuries. Keep an eye out for warning signs, such as anorexia, fever, diarrhea, reduced appetite, and stiff or unusual posture. Call your vet immediately if you notice anything amiss.

They’re Adorable!

You may be surprised at how attached you can get to something so small. However, hamsters do have a way of melting hearts. Have fun with your new pet!
