Summer is officially here! Many of our canine buddies absolutely love this time of year. However, heat can be rough on Man’s Best Friend. An Eau Claire, WI vet offers some summer care tips for dogs in this article.
Water
First and foremost, make sure Fido always has fresh water. (For bonus tail wags, drop an ice cube into his bowl on scorching days.) If your pup has a yard to run around in, keep water bowls outdoors as well. Also, always bring water along when you take your pooch off your property. You may want to get a doggy water bottle with an attached dispenser.
Grooming
Some dogs are more comfortable with a cute summer ‘do. However, this isn’t an across-the-board recommendation. If Fido has a double coat, you could actually damage his fur by clipping it. Check with your vet if you’re not sure.
Paws
Fido’s paw pads are very sensitive, and will be extra delicate when they are wet. Keep your canine pal on soft ground as much as you can, especially when it’s really hot out. You can use paw balm to protect his paws.
Parasite Control
Fleas, ticks, and wild animals are all out and about at this time of year. Make sure Fido is current with his parasite control and vaccinations!
Schedule
A schedule change may be in order. On hot days, walk and play with Fido in the mornings and evenings, when it’s cooler out.
Cold Treats
Want to score some tail wags? Get your furry buddy a frozen treat. You can find doggy ice cream in many pet stores or supermarkets. Or, make your own! You’ll find lots of great recipes online. Just stick with ingredients that are safe for dogs.
Safety
Hopefully this goes without saying, but make sure Fido always has access to shade and cool water. Also, never leave your canine companion unattended in a car, even just for a minute!
Enjoy The Sunshine
Last but not least, have some fun with your furry best friend while it’s nice out. Snow and cold will be back before you know it. Take Fido for a walk in a pretty park, and indulge him with games of Fetch or Frisbee. Time spent with dogs is never wasted!
