Did you know that the oldest cat on record—Creme Puff—lived to be a whopping 38 years old? That’s a remarkably long time for a kitty! The average life expectancy of an indoor cat is about 13 to 17 years. However, Fluffy can live much longer with good care. In fact, it’s no longer uncommon for cats to live into their 20’s. Here, an Eau Claire, WI discusses senior cat care.
Comfort
One of the most important things you can do is just keep Fluffy comfortable. Soft beds are definitely a must! Older cats often enjoy warm spots, so consider getting your furball a heated or thermal bed. You may also want to get pet ramps or stairs, or arrange an ottoman so your kitty can use it to climb to her favorite perches.
Health Care
Just like people, kitties should see their doctors more often as they age. Fluffy should come in at least once a year. At home, watch for signs of illness. Call your vet immediately if you notice anything amiss.
Facilities
Fluffy may have a hard time using a litterbox with high sides. Get her one that’s easier for her to get in and out of. Look for a litterbox that was made specifically for senior cats.
Food
Senior cats have very different nutritional needs than kittens do. Feed Fluffy a high-quality, life stage pet food. Portion control is very important here. Older felines spend a lot of time sleeping, which makes it easy for them to pack on extra pounds. Ask your vet for specific advice.
Grooming
Your kitty may have trouble reaching her whole body when grooming herself. Brush her gently to keep her coat soft and free of tangles.
Safety
Older kitties sometimes experience issues with their vision and hearing. Keep nightlights on after dark to help Fluffy get around. We also strongly recommend keeping your feline pal inside. Senior cats aren’t agile enough to escape predators or other hazards. Plus, they’re also more likely to get lost.
Love
Stress, loneliness, and boredom can all take a toll on your kitty’s health and well-being. Keep that little motor going! Pay lots of attention to Fluffy, and make sure she feels loved. Talk to her, pet her, play with her, and offer her toys and treats.
