Have you recently adopted a Guinea pig, or cavy, as they are also called? You’ve got a very cute little pet! Guinea pigs may be small, but they are big on personality. Like most pocket pets, your pet will need a clean, comfy cage; a proper diet; and lots of chew toys. However, if you want to go above and beyond, read on! A Mondovi, WI vet offers tips on how to spoil a cavy in this article.
Buddies
Guinea pigs are very sociable, and are always much happier with a friend or two. In fact, in Switzerland, it’s illegal to keep just one cavy, as it’s considered cruel. We recommend keeping these adorable furballs in pairs or groups.
Penthouse
Guinea pigs are larger than many other pocket pets, so they need quite a bit of room. Two cavies will need a cage that is at least 10.5 square feet. Of course, if you have more than two, you’ll need more space than that. One way to give your pets some more room without giving up more floor space is to get them a cage with more than one level.
DIY Toys
Guinea pigs can develop some very painful dental issues if they can’t chew enough. Luckily, you can make many chew toys out of ordinary household items. For example, the cardboard tubes from toilet paper or paper towel rolls can be turned into lots of cute chew toys. Look online for ideas and instructions.
Cozies
Guinea pigs love to snuggle and burrow into blankets. They also love cozies, which are basically sleeping bags for cavies. Buy or make some for your tiny buddy.
Free Time
Your pint-sized pal will appreciate having some free time out of his cage. Use this time to pet and play with the little guy. One great thing about Guinea pigs is the fact that they are often much more affectionate than other pocket pets. You may even find that your cavy likes to sleep on your lap!
Treats
It’s probably safe to say that all of our furry patients love treats. Guinea pigs are no exception! Your cute pet can have certain fruits and veggies, such as carrots and cucumbers. Ask your vet for specific advice.
